CWS windows earn a 4.8/5 installer rating from us for the work we spec them on: whole-home impact packages where the buyer wants a Florida-built product with current Miami-Dade approvals at a mid-market price. Custom Window Systems has manufactured windows and doors in Ocala since 1986, became part of the Pella Corporation family in 2018, and now runs more than 700,000 square feet of Florida production across Ocala, Miami, Medley, and Jacksonville. The catalog splits into two impact tiers: Hurricane Guard, the flagship aluminum and vinyl family with High Velocity Hurricane Zone approvals, and StormStrong, a vinyl value line rated to +/-50 psf for everywhere outside Miami-Dade and Broward.
That two-tier structure is a coverage split, not a quality ranking. Hurricane Guard

Explore Pella
, one of the largest window manufacturers in the country, acquired CWS in 2018 and has run it since as its Florida impact platform under the "CWS, a Pella brand" banner. The consumer brand stays Florida-first; the corporate backing shows up in engineering budget, warranty infrastructure, and a coordinated approval program we will get to below.
The family grew in September 2024, when Pella folded Lawson Industries into CWS. Lawson was a Miami-area aluminum manufacturer with roughly 60 years of history, and the absorption brought its Medley plant and its aluminum engineering lineage into the CWS catalog. If you own Lawson windows, CWS is now the brand that services them.
Day to day, that history gives CWS an unusual profile for a mid-market brand: in-state manufacturing at four plants, a dual-material catalog (vinyl in Ocala, aluminum in Medley and Miami), and a service territory covering Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.
What Our Approval Database Shows
We track manufacturers by their paper, not their brochures. Our catalog database currently holds 51 CWS products, with 87 current Florida product approvals and 28 Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance recorded against them, plus 47 design pressure records. Across the 22 Hurricane Guard products carrying large-missile impact design pressure records in that database, the strongest configurations are approved to +67.5/-100 psf, the same figure CWS publishes for its single-hung family.
Numbers like that put CWS in serious company. A -100 psf negative design pressure on a single-hung covers nearly any residential elevation in South Florida, including upper floors and open-water exposures that eliminate most value-tier products. For a mid-market brand, that is the headline: the ceiling of the catalog is high enough that the choice between CWS lines is about matching the opening, not about whether the brand can reach your requirement.
Hurricane Guard: The Flagship Impact Line
Hurricane Guard is the family CWS pitches into the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, and it covers both frame materials. The aluminum side is new: in January 2024, Miami-Dade County issued a coordinated batch of NOAs approving an entire 7000-series aluminum platform in one pass. Same-day approval of a full operation matrix takes the kind of engineering and compliance budget a corporate parent provides, and it means every 7000-series product carries a current, first-revision approval rather than a decades-old file kept alive by renewals.
Here is the aluminum platform as our database and the public approvals record it:
| Series | Operation | Design pressure (published) | Florida approval | Miami-Dade NOA |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7100 | Single-hung | +67.5/-100 psf | FL46524 | 24-0116.05 |
| 7200 | Horizontal roller | +/-60 psf | FL46525 | 24-0116.07 |
| 7300 | Picture (fixed) | Per NOA | FL46528 | 24-0116.09 |
| 7400 | Casement | Per NOA | FL46531 | 24-0116.11 |
| 7700 | French (hinged patio) door | +/-60 psf | FL46530 | 24-0116.12 |
| 7900 | Sliding glass door, up to 4 panels | Per NOA | FL46529 | 24-0116.13 |
The details we like as installers: the sashes carry a tamper-prevention design, the single-hung and roller use an AutoLock that engages on its own when the sash closes, the patio doors run stainless steel hardware against salt air, and the frames arrive with factory-drilled fastener locations. That last one sounds minor and is not; pre-located anchors mean the anchor schedule in the approval gets followed exactly, which is what a Miami-Dade inspector checks.
Hurricane Guard also includes a vinyl impact side, built on series like the 369G single-hung, which carries a statewide Florida approval at the same +67.5/-100 psf rating as the aluminum 7100. HVHZ eligibility on the vinyl series varies by product and approval, so when we quote vinyl Hurricane Guard for a Miami-Dade or Broward address we confirm the exact approval number for that series before it goes on the contract, the same discipline we apply to every brand we install.

, vinyl impact, rated to a maximum design pressure of +/-50 psf. CWS states plainly that it can be used anywhere outside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, which is exactly the honest way to sell it.
Most of Florida is that "anywhere." Outside Miami-Dade and Broward, the wind-borne debris regions still require impact protection, but typical one- and two-story openings calculate out well under 50 psf. For those homes, StormStrong buys laminated impact glass, a multichambered fusion-welded vinyl frame, a non-metallic spacer system, and Low-E glass options, at the value end of the price sheet. The frame palette is tight (white, bronze, and a bronze-over-white dual color), which is part of how the line stays affordable.
The trade is straightforward: you give up design pressure headroom and HVHZ eligibility, and you gain insulation and price. On an inland Broward-adjacent job we would spec Hurricane Guard; on the same floor plan in Port St. Lucie or Cape Coral, StormStrong covers the openings for less money and insulates better than any aluminum frame at that price.

Energy Performance: Where the Vinyl Side Earns Its Place
The dual-material catalog matters most on the energy question. Vinyl frames do not conduct heat the way aluminum does, and CWS certifies a deep bench of configurations: our mirror of the NFRC Certified Products Directory holds 725 CWS window entries, with certified U-factors as low as 0.29 on the strongest vinyl configurations. For a South Florida home, the number to steer is SHGC, and the certified CWS glass packages reach the low-SHGC territory that keeps afternoon sun from becoming an air-conditioning bill.
That is the practical case for the frame-material split we walk buyers through in our vinyl versus aluminum comparison: aluminum for the highest structural demands and the largest openings, vinyl where thermal performance and budget lead. CWS is one of the few mid-market brands where you can make that choice opening by opening without leaving the manufacturer.
The Sand Palace: A Field Test No Lab Can Stage
In October 2018, Hurricane Michael came ashore at Mexico Beach as a Category 5 storm with 160 mph sustained winds, per the National Hurricane Center's Tropical Cyclone Report. Most of the town's buildings were damaged or destroyed. One elevated concrete home, nicknamed the Sand Palace, stood through the eyewall and became the most photographed surviving structure of the storm.
Its impact windows came from Custom Window Systems of Ocala, glazed with PVB and ionoplast interlayers. Outer panes shattered under debris; the interlayers held, and the envelope stayed sealed. That is impact glazing doing precisely what it is designed to do at the extreme end of the scale, and while one house is an anecdote rather than a dataset, it is the kind of anecdote every manufacturer wishes it had.
What CWS Windows Cost Installed
These figures are our retail installed estimates for South Florida projects, from a base-size standard configuration at the low end to large openings at the high end. Size moves the number more than anything else on the order.
| Product | Line | Installed range (our retail) |
|---|---|---|
| 7100 aluminum single-hung | Hurricane Guard | $850 – $2,354 |
| 7200 aluminum horizontal roller | Hurricane Guard | $940 – $2,100 |
| 7300 aluminum picture window | Hurricane Guard | $605 – $2,400 |
| 7400 aluminum casement | Hurricane Guard | $895 – $2,100 |
| 369G vinyl single-hung | Hurricane Guard | $815 – $1,965 |
| 6100 vinyl single-hung | StormStrong | $635 – $1,875 |
| 6150 vinyl picture window | StormStrong | $940 – $2,180 |
| 7700 aluminum French door | Hurricane Guard | $3,000 – $4,350 |
| 7900 aluminum sliding glass door | Hurricane Guard | $4,900 – $12,600 |
Those ranges sit in the middle of the market: above builder-grade value lines, below the luxury tier. For a whole-home budget built around your own opening list, our impact windows cost calculator will get you closer than any table, and financing options apply to CWS packages the same as any brand we carry.
One paperwork note in the buyer's favor: CWS publishes separate warranty documents for its aluminum and vinyl products on its site. Ask for the one matching your material with the quote and read the transferability and finish terms before you sign, which is advice we give on every manufacturer.
Which Openings We Would Spec CWS On
Where CWS goes on our own quotes:
Miami-Dade and Broward, whole home. Hurricane Guard aluminum 7000-series. The 2024 NOA batch covers single-hung, roller, picture, casement, French door, and sliding glass door, so a full house specs cleanly out of one family with matching sightlines and one current approval package for the permit.
Inland and Gulf Coast counties, energy-led buyers. StormStrong 6100 and 6150 where the calculated pressures fit under +/-50 psf, stepping up to Hurricane Guard vinyl where they do not. This is the CWS lane we quote most for buyers who came in asking about cooling costs first and storms second.
Exposed elevations outside the HVHZ. Hurricane Guard, in either material. Upper floors, corner exposures, and open-water lots often calculate past what any value line carries, and the +67.5/-100 psf ceiling on the single-hung family means the requirement rarely forces a brand change mid-project.

runs to four panels with stainless rollers and anti-lift blocks. For openings beyond its envelope, we move to a manufacturer with a larger multi-panel system, and we say so on the quote.
How CWS Compares
Against PGT
PGT
PGT Custom Windows & Doors
America's largest impact window and door manufacturer, with 45 years of Florida-specific engineering.
Miami-Dade NOA / HVHZ approved 57 models across 7 product lines
Explore PGT
, the market leader, CWS offers a comparable dual-material structure with a smaller catalog and generally friendlier pricing; PGT counters with the deepest approval library in the industry and more configuration breadth. Against Miami's regional fabricators, such as the value-tier lines in our Mr. Glass review, CWS trades a little price advantage for corporate-backed warranty support and the freshest NOA set in the mid-market. None of those brands is the wrong answer; they cover different openings, budgets, and counties, which is why we carry more than one.
The honest summary: CWS is the brand we reach for when a buyer wants Florida-made, wants current Miami-Dade paper or a vinyl energy story, and wants the invoice to stay mid-market. It has been doing this since 1986, and since 2018 it has had one of the industry's largest parents standing behind the warranty.
Next Steps
- Get your design pressure requirements first. They are calculated from your address, exposure, and opening sizes, and they decide the CWS line for each opening before price enters the conversation.
- Ask which series is on the quote, not just the brand: 7100 aluminum, 369G vinyl, and 6100 StormStrong are different windows at different prices.
- Verify the approval number for your county, and check the energy figures for your exact glass package in the NFRC directory.
- Compare quotes on the same specification. Request a free estimate and we will quote CWS with the series, design pressure, approval number, and installed price line by line, so you can put it next to any other bid on your table.
Specifications are drawn from Florida product approvals, Miami-Dade NOAs, manufacturer documentation, and our catalog database as of August 2026. Approvals and product lines change; confirm current status before you order.
