Who Mr. Glass is

Mr-Glass Doors and Windows Manufacturing is based in Medley, in northwest Miami-Dade County, and led by president Ulises Senaris. The operation runs four facilities clustered within about three miles of each other: a main factory at 8051 NW 79th Place in Medley, a second Medley plant, a Miami Lakes factory, and a separate powder coating plant.

That last one matters more than it sounds. Bringing aluminum finishing in-house rather than sending extrusions out to a coater gives a manufacturer direct control over finish quality and lead time, which are the two things that most often go wrong on a color order. Not many Florida regional fabricators own their coating line.

A manufacturer does not share an installation manual across two clean-sheet designs. Sharing one means the value tier installs the same way, into the same opening conditions, with the same anchor patterns as the standard tier. That is a strength: the value products sit on a platform that has been through revision cycles and field use, rather than a separate entry-level design. What the two tiers trade shows up in three places:

Small missile certification. The MG-200, MG-250, and MG-300 carry both Large Missile Impact and Small Missile Impact approvals. The MG-350 series carries large missile only. In the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, large missile applies to openings up to 30 feet above grade and small missile applies above that. For a one or two story house, large missile is the applicable requirement and the absence of SMI costs you nothing. On a mid-rise or on upper floors above 30 feet, it rules the product out.

Design pressure. This is where the tiers differ most, and it is the number that decides which one your opening needs.

Design pressures are from the Florida product approvals. The suction number, the negative one, is what governs on most South Florida elevations, so the standard tier's -140 psf is what makes it the right answer on exposed elevations, while the value tier's -80 psf covers a great deal of inland and moderate-exposure housing.

Size envelope. The value single hung tops out 20 inches shorter than the MG-200, so tall openings belong to the standard tier. The value roller tops out at 111 inches on a three-panel against 127 inches for the MG-300.

A fixed lite carries no operating hardware, so the value engineering lands differently there. The tier logic holds for operable windows, not for every product in the series.

Florida product approval, and what to ask for

Every impact window or door installed in Florida has to carry a current Florida Product Approval, or a Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance inside the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, and your permit is submitted against that approval number. Mr. Glass clears that bar across its line. Every product in this review carries a Florida approval evaluated under TAS 201, 202, and 203 for the High Velocity Hurricane Zone, and the standard-tier windows and the sliding doors are certified for both large and small missile impact. Glass, hardware, and finishes

Mr. Glass builds on laminated impact glass with both PVB and SGP interlayer options, and both carry a 10-year glass warranty on owner-occupied residential. SGP is the stiffer interlayer and is what you want on larger lites and higher pressures.

Finishes come off the in-house coating plant, and the company publishes its coating grades more plainly than most. Across the products we track, the MG line lists AAMA 2604 and AAMA 2605 as separately orderable options on 29 products, with different warranty terms attached to each. Most manufacturers bury the coating grade in a spec sheet. Being able to order the better one by name, and see the price, is a genuine advantage of this brand for anyone specifying a dark finish.

The warranty, and how to keep every year of it

Mr. Glass publishes one of the clearer warranty documents in the category, and it is worth reading because two of its conditions are things you decide at order time.

Those are competitive terms. Two conditions determine whether you keep them, and both are easy to meet if you know them going in.

Specify AAMA 2605 on the coast. Within 2 miles of salt water, the finish warranty applies to the AAMA 2605 coating; anodized, 2604, and wood grain are excluded in that zone. Most of our service area sits inside that radius, so for a coastal home we write 2605 on the order as a matter of course. It is the better coating in salt air regardless of the warranty.

Mandatory cleaning. The warranty conditions coverage on a cleaning schedule: quarterly for inland homes, monthly for marine, coastal, and industrial areas. Approved materials are water and a pH-neutral detergent with non-abrasive cloths. Pressure washers, abrasives, steel wool, and oil-based lubricants are prohibited, and silicone-only is specified for tracks. Failure to maintain the schedule is grounds to void the finish warranty.

This is more specific than most manufacturers' language, which cuts both ways: it asks more of you, and it tells you exactly what is expected rather than leaving it to a claims adjuster's judgment. If you buy this brand on the coast, specify 2605, put the wash on a calendar, and keep a record.

None of this needs to live in your head. On windows, the value tier does what it is supposed to do. A value roller starts at $700 against $1,630 for the standard, and a value single hung starts at $750 against $1,180. On a whole-home job with twenty openings, that difference is real money.

Who the value tier is right for

The MG-350 series is a good buy in a specific set of conditions, and we specify it without hesitation when they are met:

  • One and two story homes where large missile is the applicable requirement and the 30-foot small missile threshold never comes into play.
  • Standard-size openings. Under 53 by 76 inches on a single hung, under 111 by 63 inches on a three-panel roller.
  • Inland and moderate-exposure sites where the calculated design pressure sits comfortably inside a -80 psf envelope. That covers a great deal of Broward and inland Miami-Dade.
  • Budget-constrained whole-home projects where the alternative is protecting some openings now and the rest later. A fully protected house in the value tier beats a partially protected house in a premium one, because the wind mitigation insurance credit is all-or-nothing on opening protection.
  • Rental and investment property where the economics favor meeting code correctly at the lowest defensible cost.

Where the standard tier is the right call

  • Anything above 30 feet. No small missile certification means the product does not belong on upper floors of a mid-rise.
  • High design pressure coastal exposures. If your calculated pressure exceeds the -80 psf envelope, the value tier is out and the conversation moves to the MG-200 and MG-300 or to another brand.
  • Large or tall openings. The height and width limits are real constraints, and pushing an opening to the edge of a tested envelope is not something a good installer will do.
  • Coastal homes. Specify AAMA 2605 inside the 2-mile zone; it carries the finish warranty there and outperforms the other coatings in salt air.
  • Architectural work where the specifier wants published CAD. Mr. Glass publishes dynamic-block CAD for the standard tier but not for the 350 series.
