The Company That Created the Category
PGT didn't just enter the impact window market. They created it.
Founded in 1980 in Venice, Florida by Paul Hostetler and Rod Hershberger as "Vinyl Tech" with three employees making vinyl porch enclosures, PGT was a $24 million regional window company when Hurricane Andrew struck southern Miami-Dade County on August 24, 1992. Andrew destroyed 63,500 homes and revealed that standard windows were catastrophically vulnerable to wind-borne debris. The 1994 South Florida Building Code mandated impact-resistant glazing on all new construction, and an entirely new product category needed to be invented.
PGT pivoted. Revenue jumped from $24 million to $42 million in the immediate aftermath. In 1996, PGT launched WinGuard, described as "the first complete collection of impact-resistant windows and doors" from a single manufacturer. The product line became the standard against which every subsequent impact window was measured.
By 2023, PGT's revenue peaked at $1.50 billion, making it by far the largest impact window manufacturer in the United States. In March 2024, PGT was taken private by MITER Brands (backed by Koch Equity Development) for $3.1 billion ($42.00 per share).
Today, PGT holds the most Miami-Dade NOA certifications of any manufacturer in the industry. Over 3 million WinGuard units have been installed across Florida with no reported impact failures. When a Florida homeowner says "impact windows," there's a good chance they're picturing PGT.
Product Lines
WinGuard Aluminum (Flagship)
This is the product line we install most frequently from PGT. WinGuard Aluminum is the broadest impact window selection in the Florida market, covering every residential window and door configuration.
Window types available: Single-hung, double-hung, awning, casement, horizontal roller, picture/fixed, and architectural (up to 42 sq ft per unit).
Design pressure: Standard range DP +/-50 through +/-70 PSF for most residential products. Architectural windows rate to +90/-130 PSF, among the highest in the residential market. High-rise commercial products exceed DP 100.
Glass options: Standard PVB laminated, PVB-plus (enhanced interlayer), or SentryGlas (ionoplast, 100x stiffer than PVB). 7/16" glass is standard for most residential products. PGT's proprietary Diamond Glass is a lighter-weight laminated formulation described as "nearly half the weight" of standard impact glass, targeting high-rise and large-opening applications where reducing glass weight reduces structural load on framing.
Sliding Glass Door (SGD780): Maximum panel dimensions 5'W x 10'H or 4'W x 12'H. Maximum opening width 40 feet with 8 panels on up to 4 tracks. DP +/-90 PSF. Dual-point lock, heavy-duty tandem rollers. This is one of the most versatile impact sliding glass door systems on the market for standard residential applications.
Frame colors: White, bronze, clear anodize, black, beige.
HVHZ approval: Yes. Full Miami-Dade NOA across the product line.
WinGuard Vinyl
PGT's vinyl impact line targets budget-conscious homeowners and areas where vinyl's thermal advantages (U-factor 0.28-0.32 without thermal break) outweigh aluminum's structural benefits.
Design pressure: DP +65/-70 PSF, the highest in the vinyl impact window category. This is adequate for most standard residential openings outside of corner locations (Zone 5) in higher wind zones.
Construction: Multi-chamber vinyl frame with fusion-welded sash corners. Stainless steel assembly screws throughout. SecureConnect patented integrated corner keys. SnapLock 3-point auto-lock on single-hung models. ComfortLift handles.
HVHZ approval: Yes. WinGuard Vinyl carries a Miami-Dade NOA, making it one of only a handful of vinyl impact products approved for Miami-Dade and Broward. (Note: CWS StormStrong Vinyl is NOT HVHZ-approved at DP +/-50.)
Best for: Inland and moderate-coastal homes where DP +65/-70 is sufficient, energy efficiency is a priority, and the 15-30% cost savings over aluminum matters.
PGT Sparta (Value Line)
Formerly CGI Sparta, this product line was retained when MITER Brands sunset all other CGI product lines on October 31, 2025. The Sentinel (mid-grade) and Estate (premium/architectural) CGI lines were discontinued, and Sparta was rebranded under the PGT name.
Design pressure: Up to DP +55/-65 PSF. Aluminum only.
Available configurations: Single-hung, horizontal roller, fixed, and architectural.
Best for: Budget-conscious projects where the WinGuard premium isn't justified but PGT brand recognition and dealer support are valued. Sparta sits between ECO (most affordable) and WinGuard (mid-to-premium) in the market.
PGT EnergyVue (Non-Impact Vinyl)
Vinyl windows for areas outside the Wind-Borne Debris Region where impact rating is not code-required. Good energy performance at a budget price point. NOT suitable for HVHZ, WBDR, or any location where impact protection is required or recommended.
What We See in the Field
After installing thousands of PGT products across South Florida, here's what we've observed:
Strengths
Product breadth. No other manufacturer covers as many window types, sizes, and configurations under one product approval. For a complex home with arched windows, oversized picture windows, standard single-hungs, and a large multi-panel sliding glass door, PGT can supply every unit from a single product line. This simplifies permitting (one NOA covers the entire project) and ensures consistent appearance.
Track record. Three million units with no reported impact failures is the strongest installation history in the industry. When we tell a homeowner "this product has been tested by real hurricanes at scale," we can point to Irma (2017), where Dean Ruark (PGT VP of Engineering) documented that impact windows "largely performed as designed against debris and wind pressure" with windows taking "major debris impacts to window framing members, as well as multiple debris strikes to the glazing."
Resale recognition. "PGT WinGuard" on a real estate listing is understood by Florida buyers. The brand carries weight in a way that some newer or lesser-known manufacturers don't. If you're planning to sell your home within 5-10 years, the PGT name on your windows is a selling point.
Dealer support. PGT's tiered dealer program (Diamond, Platinum, Gold) provides training, marketing support, and priority scheduling. As Diamond dealers, we have access to PGT University certification and direct manufacturer support for complex projects.
Warranty. Vinyl frames and sash: limited lifetime. Hardware and moving parts: limited lifetime. Frame finishes: 10 years. Laminated glass: 10 years. Stress cracks: 1 year. Burglary endorsement: 10 years (up to $1,000 of your insurance deductible). The warranty is transferable with terms, which supports the resale value argument.
Honest Limitations
Price. PGT is approximately 20% more expensive than ES Windows (Tecnoglass) for comparable specifications. On a 15-window project, that difference is $3,000-$6,000. PGT's premium is justified by the broader product selection and brand recognition, but for homeowners where every dollar matters, the price gap is real.
Low-E and premium finishes are upcharges. ES Windows includes Kynar/Dynar coatings, Low-E with tint, heat-strengthened glass, and stainless steel hardware as standard features at no additional cost. PGT charges 10-15% extra for equivalent Low-E options and premium finishes. When comparing quotes, ensure you're comparing the same glass and finish specifications.
Lead times. As of mid-2025 through 2026, PGT lead times for impact windows and sliding glass doors run 10-12 weeks. ES Windows delivers in 5-6 weeks. For homeowners trying to complete a project before hurricane season (June 1), this difference matters. A PGT order placed in April may not arrive until July. An ES order placed in April arrives in May.
WinGuard Vinyl DP ceiling. DP +65/-70 is adequate for most residential applications, but it's not enough for corner windows (Zone 5) on upper floors in higher wind zones. If your engineer's calculations require DP-80+ on any opening, you'll need WinGuard Aluminum for those positions (or a different manufacturer's vinyl product, though none currently exceed PGT's vinyl DP rating).
Salt-air finish durability. In severe coastal environments (within 1 mile of the ocean), we've occasionally seen powder coating chalking or minor pitting on WinGuard Aluminum frames after 15-20 years with standard finishes. This is cosmetic, not structural, and is manageable with periodic maintenance. Premium finishes (Kynar/PVDF equivalent) significantly extend coastal durability but add cost.

When to Choose PGT
- You need the broadest product selection (complex homes with many opening types and sizes)
- Brand recognition at resale matters (selling within 5-10 years)
- You want the strongest glass warranty (10 years on laminated glass)
- Your project requires the highest aluminum DP ratings (+90/-130)
- You value the largest dealer network and most established service infrastructure
When to Consider Alternatives
- Budget is the priority: ES Windows offers comparable specifications at ~20% less with premium features included standard. ECO is the most affordable option for straightforward projects.
- Lead time is critical: ES Windows at 5-6 weeks vs. PGT's 10-12 weeks. If you need to finish before hurricane season, this matters.
- Luxury/architectural: WinDoor's Estate line delivers DP ratings (+110/-195 casement) and panel sizes (12 ft tall SGD) that exceed PGT's residential range.
- Best-value vinyl: EAS Bertha is HVHZ-approved, carries the Good Housekeeping Seal, and includes double-pane with argon fill standard.
The MITER Brands Factor
PGT's March 2024 acquisition by MITER Brands (Koch Equity Development, $3.1 billion) has changed the company's structure:
What's stayed the same: Product lines, product quality, warranty coverage, dealer relationships, and manufacturing (Venice, FL). Day-to-day operations for homeowners and installers are unchanged.
What's changed:
- CGI brand lines (Sentinel, Estate) were discontinued October 31, 2025. CGI Sparta was retained and rebranded as PGT Sparta.
- Multiple plant closures across the MITER portfolio (225 layoffs in November 2024, 298 in Grinnell Iowa, 397 at Milgard Simi Valley, ~400 at Medley/Hialeah FL). These are non-PGT facilities being consolidated.
- ECO Window Systems was divested back to its original founders in September 2024.
- NewSouth Window Solutions was sold to Window Nation in September 2025.
For homeowners: if you have existing CGI windows and need replacement parts or warranty service, PGT's service team supports CGI products through July 1, 2026. After that date, contact your installer for transition guidance.
Our Recommendation
PGT WinGuard is the right choice when product breadth, brand recognition, and proven track record matter most. It's the safest recommendation for complex projects and for homeowners who plan to sell their home within 5-10 years.
For budget-conscious projects where ES Windows' specifications meet the engineering requirements, the 20% savings and faster delivery make ES the better value. For luxury waterfront homes requiring the highest design pressure ratings, WinDoor is in a class by itself.
We install products from all major manufacturers and recommend based on the specific requirements of each project, not on manufacturer preference. The best impact window is the one that meets your zone's code requirements, fits your openings, and works within your budget.
Next Steps
- Get a free estimate that includes PGT WinGuard alongside other manufacturer options so you can compare specifications and pricing side by side.
- Specify the glass and finish details when comparing quotes. PGT's base price doesn't include Low-E or premium finishes that ES Windows includes standard.
- Factor in lead time. If timing matters (hurricane season, scheduled renovation, home sale), PGT's 10-12 week lead time needs to be in your project plan.
- For the full manufacturer landscape, see our manufacturers page and our vinyl vs. aluminum comparison.
- Check MSFH eligibility for grants up to $10,000 toward impact windows from any manufacturer.
