Overview

About the WinGuard Aluminum Series

For most South Florida coastal projects, aluminum is the frame that lets an opening grow large without giving up design pressure, and WinGuard Aluminum is the line permit offices and inspectors have seen more than any other. Armor Pro reaches for it when a wall wants wide glass: a sliding door spanning a lanai, or a stacked picture-and-awning elevation facing the water, where the higher design pressures of a Miami-Dade or Broward HVHZ address rule out a softer frame. The narrow aluminum sightlines also suit contemporary and Mediterranean elevations where a homeowner wants more glass and less frame.

What sets the line apart is depth rather than any single feature. Every operation style (single hung, horizontal roller, casement, awning, picture, architectural shapes, plus sliding and French doors) runs on one extrusion platform with PGT's Diamond Glass laminated glazing, so a whole house can be specified consistently instead of mixing systems opening by opening. Behind that consistency is the deepest Miami-Dade NOA library in the category, which is the part that matters at the permit counter. The approvals already exist, inspectors recognize them, and a project clears review without the back-and-forth that off-list products invite.

Where WinGuard Aluminum gives way is thermal performance and price. For inland addresses outside the HVHZ, or projects driven by energy numbers rather than span and pressure, PGT's vinyl lines (WinGuard Vinyl and EnergyVue) carry better U-factors at a lower installed cost. Armor Pro specs aluminum where the opening or the wind zone demands it and vinyl where it does not, so WinGuard Aluminum is the default when both strength and a long approval pedigree are the priority.

Frequently Asked Questions

WinGuard Aluminum is PGT's flagship aluminum impact line and runs the full operation range on one extrusion platform: single hung, horizontal roller, casement, awning, fixed picture, architectural shapes, plus sliding glass doors and French doors. Because every style shares the same frame family, a whole house can be specified consistently instead of mixing systems opening by opening. It's been PGT's reference impact-window platform in Florida since 1998.

Yes. Every WinGuard Aluminum product is large-missile impact-rated and eligible for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone, which covers Miami-Dade and Broward counties. The line carries one of the deepest Miami-Dade NOA libraries in the industry, glazed with PGT's Diamond Glass laminated impact glass. The exact design pressure depends on the size and configuration of each opening, which we confirm against the Florida Building Code on your quote.

Aluminum's strength comes from the metal frame, so it carries higher design pressures and supports larger openings than vinyl — the right call for wide sliding doors, tall two-story glass, and the most exposed coastal walls. The narrow aluminum sightlines also suit contemporary and Mediterranean elevations where you want more glass and less frame. The trade-offs are a higher installed cost and weaker thermal numbers than vinyl, so we spec aluminum where the opening or the wind zone demands it and vinyl where it doesn't.

WinGuard Aluminum offers four standard finishes — white, bronze, black, and clear anodized — which is a deeper palette than PGT's value aluminum lines and a range vinyl can't match, especially the black and anodized options. That makes it a common choice in HOA communities with prescribed exterior colors and on contemporary elevations. We confirm the finish and any glass tint options on the order.

The SGD770A sliding door runs up to eight panels and as much as 40 feet of total expansion, in by-pass, pocket, and corner configurations. There's also a narrow-interlock version, the SGD770NS, that trades a little frame for more glass on view-driven openings. Wider, taller, and higher-pressure openings are exactly where the aluminum frame earns its place over vinyl. We size the panel count and track configuration to your opening and wind zone.
