As of October 2026, My Safe Florida Home is open. The application portal at mysafeflhome.com is accepting new accounts, free wind mitigation inspections are being scheduled, and grants of up to $10,000 remain available to income-qualified homeowners. The program enters the 2026-2027 fiscal year with $378.3 million carried into it under the state budget signed on July 1, 2026.
That second number deserves a closer look, because the money behind this cycle works differently than in past years. The Legislature did not write a new nine-figure check. It rolled forward unspent balances from earlier appropriations, and history says that distinction should shape your timing. In the 2023-2024 cycle, a $200 million appropriation ran out in about two weeks and roughly 45,000 homeowners landed on a waitlist; those figures come from Department of Financial Services program records.
We install impact windows and doors across South Florida, and My Safe Florida Home grants sit behind a steady share of the projects we quote. This post covers what the current budget provides, how it compares with prior cycles, how long the application-to-grant pipeline usually runs, and how to verify the program's status yourself before you plan a project around it.
Is My Safe Florida Home Still Open in 2026?
Yes. When we checked mysafeflhome.com ahead of publication, the site's banner read "Grants & Inspections Available," and the homepage invites homeowners to create an account and start an application the same day. No waitlist notice is posted. Instead, DFS batches new applicants into inspection groups, numbered 1 through 5, several times each week, and emails you when your group is assigned.
Two details on the current portal deserve attention:
- The intake flow starts with a prioritization questionnaire. Your account status does not advance until you submit it. During the 2023-2024 cycle, about 30,000 applicants missed this step and lost their place in the queue.
- DFS is already collecting contact information for future funding. The site's "Stay Tuned" page says the department will "continue to take contact information from interested parties as the Legislature considers new opportunities for homeowners." Read that as a signal that the current pool is finite and the state is building a list for whatever comes next.
If you have not confirmed you qualify, start with our My Safe Florida Home eligibility guide. The short version: a single-family home or townhouse permitted before January 1, 2008, a homestead exemption, and an insured dwelling value of $700,000 or less, with low-income applicants exempt from the value cap.
My Safe Florida Home Funding for 2026-2027
The 2026-2027 General Appropriations Act took an unusual path. The regular-session budget died in conference at the end of May 2026, and lawmakers passed the final version, House Bill 5001-E, in a special session. The Governor signed it on July 1, 2026, with line-item vetoes, and it became Chapter 2026-232, Laws of Florida.
For My Safe Florida Home, the enacted budget contains no new appropriation. Section 157 of the enrolled bill text instead orders the unspent balances from the prior year's program line items to revert and reappropriates them to DFS for 2026-2027:
| Appropriation category (HB 5001-E, Section 157) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Hurricane Mitigation Grants | $342,597,333 |
| Hurricane Mitigation Inspections | $19,611,525 |
| Operations and Administration | $16,000,000 |
| Education, Consumer Awareness, and Outreach | $127,340 |
| Total, single-family program | $378,336,198 |
Section 158 does the same for the My Safe Florida Condominium Pilot: $26,766,503 for condo grants and $349,370 for condo inspections, about $27.1 million in all. Between the two sections, roughly $405 million moved into the 2026-2027 fiscal year, and any leftover reappropriated dollars flow into the grant categories by default.
One expectation to reset. Proposals circulated in early 2026 for more than $600 million in new funding, including $480 million aimed at clearing the inspection backlog. That larger figure did not become law. What passed is the carried-forward $378.3 million, and while that is the biggest opening balance the relaunched program has ever had on paper, much of it is spoken for by the queue of homeowners who applied in earlier cycles and are still working toward their grants.
How 2026-2027 Compares With Past Funding Cycles
Here is the funding history since the program's relaunch, from DFS program records, plus the enacted 2026-2027 figures from the budget text itself:
| Fiscal year | Funding | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| 2022-2023 | $150 million | Program relaunch |
| 2023-2024 | $200 million | Ran out in about two weeks; roughly 45,000 wait-listed |
| 2024-2025 | $280 million, plus a $72 million supplemental | $352 million total |
| 2025-2026 | $280 million | Portal reopened August 2025 in priority waves |
| 2026-2027 | $378.3 million carried forward | No new appropriation; Sections 157-158 of HB 5001-E |
The pattern worth studying is pace, not size. Every time the portal has reopened with money available, demand has outrun supply almost immediately: two weeks to exhaust $200 million in 2023, then a staged, wave-by-wave reopening in 2025 designed to keep the intake from collapsing under its own volume. An open portal is not a funded grant. Your position in the queue is what converts one into the other, and the only way to hold a position is to finish every step the portal asks of you promptly.
From Application to Grant: How the Timeline Runs
The current portal breaks the process into stages. Condensed, it looks like this:
- Create an account at mysafeflhome.com.
- Submit the prioritization questionnaire.
- Wait for placement in an inspection group (1 through 5); assignments go out several times a week.
- Complete the inspection application inside your account.
- Have the free wind mitigation inspection performed by a state-authorized inspector.
- Review your inspection report and its recommended upgrades.
- Apply for the grant if your income tier and inspection results qualify.
The inspection is the hinge of the whole program: it documents what your home has, what it lacks, and which upgrades earn insurance credits. Our guide to what a wind mitigation inspection actually checks walks through the form item by item.
On duration: at the August 2025 reopening, DFS staged applications in priority waves, with low-income homeowners age 60 and over admitted first. Expected waits at the time ran four to six months for that first wave, eight to twelve months for typical applicants, and eighteen months or more at the long end. Treat those as the realistic planning envelope for this cycle too, since the same queue is still being worked through.
One rule voids everything else: do not start construction before you have written grant approval. Beginning work early results in automatic disqualification, and it is one of the most common ways applicants lose their grant. Our application process walkthrough covers the portal screens and documents stage by stage.
How to Check My Safe Florida Home Status Yourself
Funding status can change faster than any article can track it, ours included. Four checks take a few minutes:
- Read the portal banner. The headline at mysafeflhome.com states plainly whether grants and inspections are available. Creating an account also shows you live status labels for each stage of your own application.
- Go to the budget text. The HB 5001-E bill page at flsenate.gov links the enrolled act; Sections 157 and 158 hold the My Safe Florida Home dollars for 2026-2027. Next spring, the 2027 session's appropriations bills will show what the following cycle holds.
- Join the DFS update list. The portal's "Stay Tuned" page collects contact information and sends program updates when funding news breaks.
- Call the department. DFS lists 850-427-2559 for the program.

Next Steps
If your home was permitted before 2008, the smart sequence is to apply now, then use the waiting months to get your project scoped. Request a free estimate and we will measure your openings, price impact windows and doors against your likely grant amount, and put the quote in writing so you are ready to sign the moment your approval letter arrives. If the grant math leaves a gap, our financing page covers the payment options we offer alongside it.
