Frequently Asked Questions

The AR5520 is PGT's WinGuard Vinyl standard-profile architectural-shape window, a fixed (non-operating) accent window available in trapezoid, arch, half circle, gothic, triangle, eyebrow, and fully custom shapes. We install these above doors, over picture windows, and in gable ends to finish off a wall with an architectural detail while keeping the whole opening impact-rated. It is built on the WinGuard Vinyl 3.5-inch frame platform with Diamond Glass laminated impact glazing.

Yes. The AR5520 is LMI (Large Missile Impact) rated and HVHZ-certified for Miami-Dade and Broward installations, so an accent shape doesn't become the weak point in your envelope. It carries a design pressure of up to +80/-110 psf. We confirm the current approval and the design pressure for your specific shape and opening at the time of quote.

The AR5520 runs from a minimum of 10 by 16 inches up to a maximum of 42 square feet of glass area, with the exact limits depending on the shape you choose. Because it is a fixed, non-operable unit, there is no operating hardware to size around. We'll lay out the shape to match your existing opening or the window below it and verify the size against the approval before ordering.

Thanks to its vinyl frame, the AR5520 is the more energy-efficient choice for an architectural shape: U-factors run about 0.24 to 0.30 across the glass packages, well below the aluminum line. It offers Energy Shield, Energy Shield Max, and SolarControl LowE2 glass with optional argon fill, putting SHGC anywhere from roughly 0.20 to 0.34. For South Florida heat we usually recommend the argon Energy Shield Max or SolarControl LowE2 for the lowest solar heat gain.

The AR5520 offers more color choices than the aluminum line: White (standard), Beige, Bronze, Black, and two-tone Black/White or Bronze/White finishes so the exterior and interior can differ. Grid options include 7/8-inch traditional simulated divided lites, 9/16-inch or 13/16-inch flat grid-between-the-glass, and a 1-inch contour grid-between-the-glass. We'll match the finish and grid to the windows the shape sits above so the wall reads as one design.

Installed cost depends on the shape, the size, the glass package, and the condition of the opening, so Armor Pro provides a free estimate rather than a flat price. Custom shapes such as gothic, eyebrow, and arches typically cost more than a simple trapezoid because of the fabrication involved. We'll measure the opening, recommend a glass package for your exposure, and give you a written quote.

WinGuard Vinyl is the vinyl version of PGT's flagship impact line and the best-selling impact vinyl in the country. It carries the same Diamond Glass laminated impact glazing and HVHZ approvals as the aluminum line, but on a 3-1/2 inch welded vinyl frame that insulates better and never needs paint. The difference comes down to span and pressure: aluminum handles the oversized and highest-load openings, vinyl handles the rest at a lower installed cost. Many projects use both under the WinGuard name.

Yes. WinGuard Vinyl is large-missile impact-rated and eligible for Miami-Dade and Broward HVHZ installation, carrying Miami-Dade Notices of Acceptance across its operation styles. It's the line we install most often on standard South Florida residential replacements because it clears the code, costs less than aluminum, and runs tighter thermally. The exact wind rating depends on the size and configuration, which we confirm on the quote.

PGT has built impact windows and doors in Venice, Florida since 1980 and is the largest impact-window and -door manufacturer in the country. It was the first company to develop impact-resistant products that met Miami-Dade County's hurricane code after Hurricane Andrew, and the line is engineered specifically for Florida conditions. PGT is now part of the MITER Brands family, alongside WinDoor, ECO, and NewSouth, but the products are still made in Florida under the PGT name.
