Frequently Asked Questions

Reserve Traditional is Pella's premium clad-wood and all-wood line built in a traditional residential aesthetic, with detailing suited to colonial, craftsman, and other classic architectural styles where a visible wood interior is part of the design. It comes in casement, awning, double-hung, in-swing patio door, and sliding patio door configurations on a 5-inch frame depth. We install Reserve Traditional for South Florida homeowners who want genuine wood interiors and high-end detailing rather than a vinyl or fiberglass look.

No. Reserve Traditional itself is the non-impact clad-wood option in the Reserve Series, tested to a design pressure of +50/-50 psf on most configurations. If you need a Pella clad-wood window that is HVHZ-rated for the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone in Miami-Dade and Broward, the line's Reserve Impact-Resistant sub-product is the one with Large Missile Impact-rated glass. As your installer, we'll steer you to the Reserve Impact variant whenever your opening sits in the HVHZ or your permit requires impact protection.

Sizes depend on the configuration: a fixed casement reaches up to 144 by 144 inches, a vent casement up to 47 by 108 inches (about 19.5 square feet), a double-hung up to 48 by 96 inches, and an awning up to 53 by 29 inches. On doors, the in-swing patio door goes up to 48 by 119.5 inches and the OX/XO sliding patio door up to about 119 by 119.5 inches. We confirm the exact maximum that applies to your opening and configuration at the time of quote.

The Reserve Traditional windows and the sliding patio door are tested to +50/-50 psf, and the in-swing patio door is rated to +55/-55 psf. Design pressure is the wind load the unit is built to resist, and the figure your opening must meet depends on its size, height, and wind exposure. Because Reserve Traditional is non-impact, we'll confirm at quote whether your opening also needs the HVHZ-rated Reserve Impact variant for code compliance.

Reserve Traditional uses 11/16-inch insulating glass with a wide range of Low-E coatings. Across the packages the U-factor runs from 0.19 to 0.51 and SHGC from 0.16 to 0.64, so for the Florida sun a SunDefense+ unit (U 0.25, SHGC 0.20) or SunDefense (U 0.28, SHGC 0.20) gives strong solar-heat control, while clear IG (U 0.45, SHGC 0.57) is the entry option. We'll recommend the glass package that best balances heat gain, daylight, and budget for your home.

On the exterior, Reserve Traditional uses Pella's EnduraClad in Standard, Feature, and Custom colors, with an EnduraClad Plus protective finish available. Interior wood choices include pine, mahogany, and Douglas fir, finished unfinished, factory primed, factory prefinished paint, or stained, and grilles come as SDL, GBG, or integral grilles in patterns like Traditional, Prairie, New England, and Victorian. Hardware finishes range from White and Matte Black to Satin Brass, Satin Nickel, and Oil-Rubbed Bronze, and we'll match all of it to your interior at quote.

Reserve comes in three forms, and only one is built for the storm. Reserve Traditional and Reserve Contemporary are premium clad-wood and all-wood windows with no impact rating, while Reserve Impact-Resistant puts HVHZ-rated impact glass in a clad-wood frame, rated to Wind-zone 4 with Large Missile Impact D for Miami-Dade and Broward. For a hurricane-zone project we spec the Impact-Resistant variant specifically; the Traditional and Contemporary versions can't be permitted at an HVHZ address.

Reserve Impact-Resistant is the clad-wood answer, an aluminum-clad exterior over a real wood interior, which is the warmest interior a window offers and the most demanding to maintain in salt air and high humidity. Most impact windows in Florida are aluminum or vinyl, which are lower-maintenance and lower-cost. Reserve Impact is the choice when the visible wood interior is part of the design and the owner accepts the upkeep; for the same HVHZ protection in a vinyl frame, HurricaneShield covers the opening for less.

Pella Corporation is a family-owned national manufacturer headquartered in Pella, Iowa, founded in 1925 and now spanning more than 20 plants across the country. For the Florida hurricane market the important detail is that Pella's impact lines, HurricaneShield and Defender, are built in Ocala, Florida by Pella's CWS subsidiary, so the storm products are made in-state rather than shipped in. We install and service Pella across South Florida and handle the order, permit, and installation regardless of which plant a given product comes from.
